The use of interactive speech, produced by computers, can provide a “talking tutor” that tirelessly reads aloud, asks questions, corrects errors, continually assesses performance, and adjusts the reading level to the individual student. Controlled studies that compare the computer-based tutor with human one-on-one tutors and have a control group receiving regular instruction showed that the tutored group surpassed the control group in Word Attack, Word Comprehension and Passage Comprehension by significant amounts. Furthermore, the computer tutored group surpassed the human tutored group in 2 of the 3 measures.

Traveling-Tutor is unique in its range of multiple features that enhance the learning process.

For example, the read-aloud function is well known for its ability to improve literacy and is supported by most products in the literacy group. However, the Traveling-Tutor adds quizzes and feedback functionality along with on-demand read-aloud capability. Many studies have shown that these specific interactive functions are crucial in getting student involvement and in quickly developing reading comprehension.

With interactive features and a wireless cloud network to connect the student, other classmates, the teacher, and the Traveling-Tutor itself, a highly engaging, real tutoring environment can be created. Teachers now have powerful options: They can develop programs for independent study (e.g., homework) in which the student is self-directed but supported in a 1:1 ratio by the Traveling-Tutor. Or they can use the Traveling-Tutor as an integrator and support system for group activities.

Another issue is the Internet. Internet access is truly an important skill today; however, the way that Internet access is enabled is an important consideration. Like many read-write products, the Traveling-Tutor offers Internet access, but unlike most of its competitors the Traveling-Tutor does not require Internet access. Teachers select the content of the Traveling-Tutor and load that content into the students’ Traveling-Tutors through the Tutor’s wireless cloud network. With the content download, the Tutor becomes a self-contained tutoring system and doesn’t require an expensive Internet connection to provide its extensive functionality set. When teachers wish to use the Internet for research or enrichment, such as via the school’s Wi-Fi service, the Traveling-Tutor not only supports the connection, but also can enrich the reading environment with read-aloud and other reading support tools.

A final consideration is system design. To be really effective, technology-based solutions need to be available to the student, easily manageable, and cost-effective.  And, as important as any other criteria, the solution should spark an enthusiastic response among students, teachers, and parents.

Among technologies, the Traveling-Tutor is unique in its system design:

1.      Anywhere, anytime learning – Inside and outside the classroom students have 24/7 access to real tutoring functions, educational resources, and PC applications on the Traveling-Tutor.

2.      Integrated services – Traveling-Tutor enhances current school programs rather than replacing them.  Teachers need less supplementary training because materials and methods are familiar. Compatible with most standards-compliant PC peripherals.

3.      iPAQ platform – The primary platform for the Traveling-Tutor is the Hewlett-Packard iPAQ 110 pocket computer.  In addition to being rugged and low cost, research shows that the iPAQ is a favorite with students because of its convenient size and capabilities.

4.      Low cost – The Traveling-Tutor provides 1:1 tutoring to students for less than 35 cents per hour of use. The Traveling-Tutor delivers more services than any other educational product on the market – and delivers them at a substantially lower cost.
